The Founding of Rome

It may not seem like it, but this Friday holds a very significant date in world history; April 21st marked the beginning of Rome, Italy. The history behind the founding of Rome is quite fascinating. According to legend, Ancient Rome was founded by two brothers, Romulus and Remus, who were also demi-gods, in 753 B.C.E. The legend claims that, in an argument over who would rule the city (or, in another version, where the city would be located), Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself.

Although this origin story may be quite twisted, many people everywhere celebrate Rome’s birthday with festive parades and fireworks. One unique way of celebration Romans often use is the lighting of torches down Aventine Hill in Rome. Some people around the world even travel to the city of Rome to celebrate Rome’s birthday and show their appreciation to this innovative city. Many innovations that have changed our lives today have originated from Rome, such as: grid-based cities, arches, sewers and sanitation, roads and highways, aqueducts, Roman numerals, surgery tools and techniques, the Julian calendar, and even the Newspaper! So, light a torch this Friday and celebrate the founding of Rome!
